Someday I'd like to itemize the founders and features of each philosophy with maybe an abstract of my own, for later reference, just for fun.I can't say I believe much of what I'm reading in this book, however, at least regarding the history and veracity of the ancient gnostic's vast (and complexly convoluted) underworld network of behind-the-scenes movers and shakers in world politics, religion, and thought. The book, I'm discovering, is really more of a reference work than a book to pick up and read from start to finish, though finish it I happily will. The lengthy introduction provides abstracts of just about every philosophic movement in history, and serves as an excellent refresher course for students of philosophy. I'm still slowly reading through The Secret Teachings of All Ages, about halfway through this gargantuan compendium of all things arcane in the disciplines of religious mythology and mystical religions, with their always intriguing ancient rites, symbols, and of course, "secret teachings".

Gahr befriended the rising star, and over a span of approximately ten years he photographed Springsteen, both on- and offstage. Gahr’s earliest photographs of the musician showcase a youthful Springsteen, not even aged twenty-three, in Asbury Park, New Jersey, on the eve of a career breakthrough. Bruce Springsteen: From Asbury Park, to Born To Run, to Born In The USA Photographs by David Gahr, Contributions by Chris Murray, Foreword by Maureen OrthĪn unprecedented look at a very young Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band, from the group’s creation and early New Jersey days to their meteoric rise and seminal Born in the USA tour, in photographs almost all not previously published.ĭavid Gahr (1922–2008) was tapped by Columbia Records designer John Berg to shoot cover art for Bruce Springsteen’s second album, The Wild, the Innocent and the E Street Shuffle. Houchin in his book Censorship of the American Theatre in the Twentieth Century, theater artists specifically have a power that some fear will instigate the changing of the status quo: Theater in particular – in America and around the world – has a kind of immediacy and power to reach people on a deeper level.Īccording to John H. From theater to music, journalism to film, photography to other visual arts, art forms and artistic expressions have stirred people to action, whether that action takes of the form of activism or protest. Throughout history, art has been a subject of controversy, often leading to censorship. Indecent gives audiences a look at how God of Vengeance came to tour Europe and eventually made its way to America and Broadway, a look behind-the-scenes at the cast and crew in the original production, and the eventual scandal surrounding the cast being arrested and tried on the grounds of obscenity.Ĭensorship is a dominant theme in Indecent and the play raises many questions for its audiences to ponder: Should a playwright ever censor themselves? Should producers have the right to censor work that isn’t theirs? Who has the right to censor someone else’s art? Paula Vogel’s Indecent follows the trajectory of the play God of Vengeance, written in 1906, which features a brothel owner and his daughter who falls in love with one of the brothel’s prostitutes. White Dwarf Rohan has picked up where Tolkien left off and then some. Rohan clears the major hurdle of a trilogy opening he actually makes me want to read book two! Stay tuned. The characters are nicely done, and the final confrontation between Elof and the representative of the Ice powers has a nifty magical twist. a grittily solid background of impending Ice Age. Much fascinating research is evident here. The concept of the Ice itself as the ultimate enemy is a remarkable feat. Scott Rohan has an extraordinary gift for making every scene come to life with vivid reality A very good and a very powerful writer. I consider The Anvil of Ice to be an outstanding piece of fantasy fiction, leaving one eager to welcome the second book in the series. It begins a trilogy which will be worth following. A skilfully told tale, blending myth and prehistory into a carefully wrought world where the conflict of Ice Age forces is focussed in the person of an enigmatic smith. This remarkable novel reveals a gifted writer of stories, and pages turn as if by magic. Rohan creates a haunting sense of mythology rather than fantasy. Michael Scott Rohan has conceived an interesting and original fantasy concept. In his remarkable debut Thomas Penn recreates an England which is both familiar and very strange - a country that seems medieval yet modern, in which honour and chivalry mingle with espionage, realpolitik, high finance and corruption. On a cold November day this girl, the sixteen-year-old Catherine of Aragon, arrived in London for a wedding upon which the fate of England would hinge. Now, in what would be the crowning glory of his reign, his elder son would marry a great Spanish princess. But Henry had a crucial asset: his queen and their children, the living embodiment of his hoped-for dynasty. Although he built palaces, hosted jousts, gave out lavish presents and sent ambassadors across Europe, for many he remained a usurper, a false king. Henry VII had clambered to the top of the heap - a fugitive with a flimsy claim to England's crown who through luck, guile and ruthlessness had managed to win the throne and stay on it for sixteen years. England had been ravaged for decades by conspiracy, violence, murders, coups and counter-coups. I leave the assessment of my growth to others. I want two things: to spend the hours of my life doing something that is satisfying to me and to make a contribution. This Book Just Ate My Dog Byrne, Richard. Both my nieces enjoyed it, the younger one especially. Brightly illustrated with adorable-looking characters, it’s a quick read and very, very silly. He got all meta on himself with this picture book. That’s exactly what happens in This Book Just Ate My Dog! by Richard Byrne. But what about a book where the book itself is a character? And the reader has to help out to move the story along? Yeah, that blew the mind of my five-year-old niece, too. I had believed the Choose Your Own Adventure books were as interactive as it got. They are published by Pabel-Moewig Verlag, a subsidiary of Bauer Media Group.
